Justice (retd) Miankhel appointed CAT chairman

 The federal government has appointed Justice (retd) Mazhar Alam Miankhel, former chief justice of Peshawar High Court and former judge of the Supreme Court, as the chairman of the Competition Appellate Tribunal (CAT) for a period of three years. The federal cabinet in its meeting on Wednesday approved the appointment. According to the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), 212 appeals are pending before CAT. The tribunal remained non-functional for seven-and-a-half years of the last 10 years due to which the business organizations had been filing writ petitions against CCP orders in the high courts. A total of 140 such petitions had been filed so far. LHC makes procedure to obtain physical remand more viable, transparent

In a bid to make the process of obtaining remand more viable and transparent, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has instructed magisterial courts not to grant remand in the absence of the accused. The court directed to examine progress in the investigation and refuse to extend the physical remand if there is no strong reason placed by the investigation officers (IOs) of the cases. The directive, issued by a division bench led by Justice Ali Zia Bajwa, outlines guidelines for magistrates and administrative judges to follow when deciding matters related to accused individuals on physical remand. The bench emphasised that the accused should have a fair opportunity to oppose the IO’s remand request, either personally or through legal representation. Govt will support ECP in holding ‘fair polls’

Unknown assailants target college bus to AJK, injure two girls

ECP begins compiling final list of constituencies

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken more steps to ensure the general elections are held on the given date of Feb 8, 2024, almost finalising the delimitation of constituencies and appointing key staff at the regional level, officials and sources in the polls oversight body said. The ECP on Sunday concluded the process of deciding the objections raised on the changes to the revamped constituencies. The polls supervisor had announced in September that it would issue the final list of constituencies on Nov 30. According to the sources, the list of the constituencies in light of the fresh delimitation based on the 7th Population and Housing Census 2023 had been compiled ahead of their official announcement. Eight terrorists killed in South Waziristan operation 

Security forces on Sunday killed at least eight terrorists during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's South Waziristan district, the military said.  According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation was conducted in the Sararogha area of the district after receiving reports about the presence of terrorists. A four-year-old American girl held by Hamas in Gaza was released on Sunday, President Joe Biden said, as the group said it had handed over 13 Israeli hostages, three Thais and one with Russian citizenship on the third day of a truce with Israel. The release of some of the hostages captured when Hamas fighters rampaged through southern Israel on Oct. 7 is expected to be mirrored by the Israelis freeing another group of 39 Palestinian prisoners as on previous days in the truce. Protest held in Karachi against demolitions

Police conducted a raid and arrested a suspected robber on Saturday who injured a father and son during a robbery. Additionally, police arrested a proclaimed offender in a double murder case and started the investigation process by seizing the murder weapons. ‘Drug addict’ murdered

A drug addict was allegedly stabbed to death by his friend in Sabzazar on Saturday. The victim, Abid Hussain reportedly was a drug addict and had a dispute with another addict at Amin Park Syed Pura Multan Road. The suspect attacked the victim with a knife, inflicting fatal wounds. Police moved the body to a morgue for an autopsy and were investigating the matter further. ATC finally gets challans in riots cases

After a record delay of 198 days, the Rawalpindi district police on Friday finally submitted ‘incomplete’ challans in seven cases of this year’s May 9 violence to an anti-terrorism court (ATC). The police have even been unable to prepare the challans for the three central cases related to the vandalism and arson at the military’s General Headquarters (GHQ) and other sensitive buildings. However, Judge Malik Ijaz Asif of the special ATC has approved all these challans for hearing and issued notices for the distribution of copies to the accused, lawyers and prosecutors as well as indictments. The interim federal cabinet on Friday gave the nod to seven memorandum of understanding (MoUs) with Kuwait for an investment worth $10 billion that would be signed by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar during his upcoming visit to the Middle Eastern country. The MoUs will be inked for projects in various fields, including expansion of water reservoirs, mining facilities, protection and expansion of mangrove forests for coastal areas, investment in IT sector and food security. ECP announces verdict on PTI intra-party polls today

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will announce its verdict on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) intra-party elections case on Thursday (today), deciding whether the party is eligible to obtain an election symbol for the upcoming general elections scheduled to be held on February 8 next year. Earlier, the election supervisor had reserved the decision on September 13 after the PTI lawyer submitted his reply following the issuance of a show-cause notice to the party. A four-member bench led by Nisar Durrani heard the case. The PTI intra-party polls has been pending before the ECP since 2022. Russia loads missile with nuclear-capable glide vehicle into launch silo

Russia's rocket forces loaded an intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with the nuclear-capable "Avangard" hypersonic glide vehicle into a launch silo in southern Russia, according to a defence ministry TV channel broadcast on Thursday. President Vladimir Putin announced the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle in 2018, saying it was a response to US development of a new generation of weapons and a US missile defence system that it could penetrate. As it approaches its target, the Avangard glide vehicle detaches from the rocket and is able to manoeuvre sharply outside the trajectory of the rocket at hypersonic speeds of up to 27 times the speed of sound (about 21,000 miles per hour or 34,000 kilometres per hour). Judge questions legal authority of SC HR cell

Supreme Court’s Justice Athar Minallah in his dissenting note held that the proceedings of the SC Human Rights Cell (SCHRC) were “illegal and ultra vires the Constitution” as a three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan, heard the issue of a complaint filed by a woman against a housing society owner during the tenure of former CJP Saqib Nisar, who heard it in his chamber. In his dissenting note, Justice Minallah also asked the SC registrar to restrain the cell from undertaking any activity initiated by the CJP or its director general and issue summons, orders, directions as well as letters having no “legal backing”.
