Enmity breeds alliances

During the Cold War, small and developing nations aligned themselves with either the Soviet or the American bloc in order to gain an insurance policy for their continued survival and defence needs. Pakistan joined the American bloc and lived with the insurance policy which was called "borrowed power" allowing it to create some semblance of stability against an aggressive India, which back then did not accept the creation of Pakistan. India, on the other hand, had decided to join the global power that happened to live in the neighborhood. The Soviet Union had enlisted India as a shield against an expansive America that was enlisting countries in the Soviet neighborhood. The reality is that it wasn't just the weak states that needed the American or the Russian friendship as an insurance for their defence needs. Climate change: by the rich, of the rich, for the poor

Thinking about the popular HBO show, Game Of Thrones, in retrospect it’s clear now that the weakest among the army of humans eventually kill the strongest and meanest of the white walkers. No skillful swordsmen, no dragon, no land army, but rather a little girl with just a knife ends up killing the leader of the most dangerous army against which the entire humanity stands no chance. The weakest and the ones who were ridiculed at the outset were also the ones that survived in the end. Everybody else vanishes. The last men standing aren’t really due to their sheer power or fighting or intellectual skills. Similarly, when we look at the story of what happened to the dinosaurs, we realise that the weakest among them survived in the end. The birds we have today are arguably the only descendants of the dinosaurs.
