Marine Beach Walk project starts departmental feud

Departmental tussles are not an alien concept in the country, often they impact multi-billion rupee projects; and the same seems to be happening to the Peoples Marine Beach Walk project. The entertainment project, which was launched last year, between the Hyperstar Store, Clifton, and Dua Chowrangi on the Sea View Beach road, at a cost of about Rs 3 billion, has become the source of a dispute between the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) and Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The KPT claims that the land which is being used by the KDA for the project, which will be a 100 ft-wide 1.5 kilometre long road featuring a walking track, play land, restaurants, and water sports, belongs to them and that the KDA is encroaching onto their domain. In this regard, an officer of the KPT privy to the development, told the Express Tribune under the condition of anonymity that while in the past KPT had been giving land to KDA for development works but this time around KDA had unilaterally claimed ownership of...

The PML-N leader disclosed that Qamar Bajwa and Faiz Hameed played instrumental roles in shaping legislation related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Arab states, Turkey ask World Court to declare Israeli occupation illegal

Arab states urged international judges on Monday to rule the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories illegal and Turkey described the occupation as "the real obstacle to peace" on the final day of hearings in a case examining its legal status. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has been hearing arguments from more than 50 states following a request by the UN General Assembly in 2022 to issue a non-binding opinion on the legal consequences of the Israeli occupation. On the sixth and last day of hearings, Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yildiz told judges the occupation was the root cause of conflict in the region. Yildiz also addressed the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas in Israel, which killed 1,200 people, and Israel's military response that has since killed more than 29,000 Palestinians. "The unfolding situation after October 7 proves once again that, without addressing the root cause of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there can be no peace in the ...

The reserved seats’ dilemma

The unexpected victory of PTI-backed independent candidates in the February 8 general elections has left political parties, the establishment as well as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a quandary. The ECP was supposed to issue complete poll results within 14 days after the general elections. Yet it has not yet been able to decide if it should allot reserved seats to the independent candidates entering the National Assembly under the banner of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). The polls oversight authority has already allotted reserved seats to all other parties. According to a notification, the ECP has given the PML-N 19 women’s seats and four minority seats. The PPPP has got 12 women’s seats and two minority seats and the MQM-P has been allocated four women’s seats and one minority seat. Other parties—the JUI-F, the PML-Q and the IPP—have received one seat each. The ECP has so far notified allocation of a total of 38 reserved seats for women and seven for minorities. It ha...

Arrest warrant for newly elected MNA issued

An arrest warrant has been issued for the newly elected member of the National Assembly (MNA) Raja Khurram Shehzad Nawaz in the Azadi March case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and others. Judicial Magistrate Shaista Khan Kundi heard the case. On May 25, 2022, the PTI kicked off its long march after Imran was ousted as the prime minister through a no-confidence motion against him and workers from different cities of the country reached the federal capital. Imran called off the long march on May 26 for fear that the situation was getting violent, as several cases were registered against him and his party for turning violent and clashing with the law enforcement agencies. The government had attempted to prevent the convoy led by Imran from reaching the capital by shutting down all entry and exit points around the city, but was forced to allow in the protesters by an emergency Supreme Court order. On May 26, the PTI founder ended the rally, warning the government...

Oil prices dip as Fed hints at delayed rate cuts

Oil prices fell more than 2% on Friday and were on track for a weekly decline after the US central bank indicated that interest rate cuts could be delayed by at least two more months. Brent crude futures were down $1.89, or 2.3%, at $81.78 a barrel at 1700 GMT, and US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down $1.88, or 2.4%, to $76.73. For the week, Brent is set to decline about 2% and the US benchmark is on track to fall about 3%. However, indications of healthy fuel demand and supply concerns could revive prices in the coming days. US Federal Reserve policymakers should delay interest rate cuts by at least another couple of months, Fed Governor Christopher Waller said on Thursday, which could slow economic growth and curb oil demand. “The entire energy complex is reacting, because if inflation begins to come back it will slow demand for energy products,” said Tim Snyder, economist at Matador Economics. “That is not something the market wants to digest right now, especially as i...

The strong performance of dollar bonds, coupled with rupee stability, contributed to the index’s advancement. Although the KSE-100 index briefly dipped before the final hours, growing investor confidence propelled it to climb rapidly, reaching an intra-day high at 61,952.09 points just before the close. The market closed in the green, nearing the 62,000-point mark. “Stocks closed higher after the government slashed NSC rates and a coalition po...

Border challenges stall Pakistan-Afghanistan trade

Peshawar serves as the gateway to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, facilitating the import and export of various products. The Torkham border acts as a pathway, enabling the expansion of trade between the two countries on a global scale. Pakistan and Afghanistan share a border spanning over 2,600 kilometres. Following the implementation of border fencing, illegal movements of goods across the border have been curtailed to some extent. There are 18 trading points along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, with key crossing points being Torkham and Chaman. Torkham, situated in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Chaman, located in Balochistan, are connected to Afghanistan’s Jalalabad and Kandahar provinces respectively. According to a survey conducted by the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce, trade between the two countries amounted to $2.5 billion in 2010. Pakistan to seek $6b in new IMF loan

Pakistan plans to seek a new loan of at least $6 billion from the International Monetary Fund to help the incoming government repay billions in debt due this year, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing a Pakistani official. The country will seek to negotiate an Extended Fund Facility with the IMF, the report said, adding that the talks with the global lender were expected to start in March or April. Pakistan averted default last summer thanks to a short term International Monetary Fund bailout, but the programme expires next month and a new government will have to negotiate a long-term arrangement to keep the $350-billion economy stable. Ahead of the bailout, the South Asian nation had to undertake a slew of measures demanded by the IMF, including revising its budget, a hike in its benchmark interest rate, and increases in electricity and natural gas prices. The IMF did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment on the Bloomberg report. Pakistan's finance m...

Ineligible hiring at Exim bank

The federal government has decided to hire a new head of Pakistan’s Export-Import (Exim) bank amid a disclosure of discrepancy in the age of the incumbent president, which should have made him ineligible for the appointment four years ago. Sources in the Ministry of Finance told The Express Tribune that a decision has been made to expedite the process for the appointment of the chief executive officer and the president of the Exim Bank of Pakistan. This decision was taken after it surfaced that the incumbent chief executive did not meet the eligibility criteria at the time of his appointment in December 2019, according to officials. In July last year, the federal cabinet had extended the tenure of the chief executive of the Exim Bank for a period of six months or until a new appointment, whichever is later. But the Ministry of Finance was now considering stopping the president from attending the office, said the sources. The advertisement for the appointment of the CEO of EXIM Bank had...

World Food Program halts distribution in northern Gaza until safety improves

The UN’s World Food Program (WFP) on Tuesday announced that it had halted food distribution in northern Gaza until safety conditions there improve. “The decision to pause deliveries to the north of the Gaza Strip has not been taken lightly, as we know it means the situation there will deteriorate further and more people risk dying of hunger,” it said in a statement, adding that it remains committed to reaching people across the entire Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli attacks for months. However, it said, the safety and security to deliver critical food aid and for the people receiving it must be ensured. Stressing that the latest reports confirm Gaza’s slide into hunger and disease as food and safe water have become incredibly scarce and diseases are rife, it added: “WFP will seek ways to resume deliveries in a responsible manner as soon as possible. A large-scale expansion of the flow of assistance to northern Gaza is urgently needed to avoid disaster.” Read also: UN likel...

US proposes UN Security Council oppose Rafah assault, back temporary Gaza ceasefire

The United States has proposed an alternative draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and opposing a major Israeli ground offensive in Rafah in southern Gaza, according to the text seen by Reuters on Monday. Washington has been averse to the word ceasefire in any UN action on the Israel-Hamas war, but the US draft text echoes language that President Joe Biden said he used last week in conversations with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US draft text "determines that under current circumstances a major ground offensive into Rafah would result in further harm to civilians and their further displacement including potentially into neighbouring countries." Israel plans to storm Rafah, where more than 1 million of the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza have sought shelter, prompting international concern that such a move would sharply worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
