According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz conveyed his best wishes for President Donald Trump and expressed Pakistan’s willingness to engage closely with the US across areas of mutual interest. The conversation took place amid escalating tensions in South Asia following the Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). He cited the country’s sacrifices in the global war on terror, including over 90,000 lives lost and $152 billion in economic damages. UK urges calm as IIOJK attack sparks diaspora tensions in London

The UK government on Tuesday urged calm among Indian and Pakistani communities in London amid fears that tensions following a deadly militant attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) could spill over into the diaspora. Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer issued the appeal in the House of Commons after lawmakers expressed concern that the April 22 attack, which left 26 people dead in the Pahalgam region, could inflame diaspora relations in Britain. "These issues have long been discussed with passion on British streets, and we call on all sides — all community leaders — to urge calm at a time of heightened regional tension," Falconer told Parliament. The minister was responding to an urgent question on the UK’s stance following the attack, which has triggered a fresh wave of diplomatic hostility between the nuclear-armed neighbours. Lawmakers cited reports of protests turning hostile outside both Indian and Pakistani high commissions in London, raising ...

Saudi, Qatar agree to pay Syria’s $15m debt to World Bank

Saudi Arabia and Qatar announced on Sunday that they would settle Syria’s debt to the World Bank totalling roughly $15 million, according to a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency. Both Gulf states have played a key role in the diplomatic outreach to Syria’s new rulers since the ouster of longtime strongman Bashar al-Assad in December. “The ministries of finance in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the state of Qatar jointly announce their commitment to settle Syria’s outstanding arrears to the World Bank Group, totalling around $15 million,” the statement said. The statement came just days after Syria’s central bank governor and finance minister attended the IMF and World Bank spring meetings for the first time in more than 20 years. Much of Syria’s infrastructure has been destroyed by 14 years of war, which began with a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests. Assad was ousted in a lightning offensive by Islamist-led rebels in December, and Syria’s new government has sought...

How much duty will Pakistanis pay on iPhone 16, older models? Here are the details

Pakistan’s Directorate General of Customs Valuation has established new customs values for the import of 187 types of Apple iPhones, including the recently launched iPhone 16. The move follows the issuance of Valuation Ruling 1909 of 2025 and comes after requests from the Collectorate of Customs (Airport) in Islamabad and representations from stakeholders pushing for an update to include the latest models. The previous customs valuation had remained unchanged for over a year and no longer reflected current international market prices. Several older iPhone models had also reached their End of Life (EOL) status, requiring depreciation adjustments. To determine the revised customs values, the Directorate analysed recent import data, current market trends, and discrepancies between market prices and the existing valuation, in line with Sections 25 and 25A of the Customs Act, 1969. Officials said multiple meetings were held with stakeholders to discuss the new valuations. "Stakeholders...

New law lets Pakistanis hold dual nationality with 22 countries

Pakistan has formalised new dual citizenship arrangements with 22 countries under the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2024, allowing its nationals to retain Pakistani citizenship even after acquiring nationality of these countries. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, a sub-department of the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that Pakistani citizens will no longer be required to renounce their Pakistani nationality if they obtain citizenship from any of the 22 designated countries. This marks a significant departure from the previous policy, under which only a few select countries had such agreements with Pakistan. The bill has been approved by the National Assembly’s Standing Committee and is expected to be fully implemented following final parliamentary approval. The Ministry of Law clarified during a recent briefing that many countries require proof of citizenship renunciation before granting new nationality, which created complications for Pakistanis abroad. Salman Ali Agha shares what HBL PSL needs to compete globally

Pakistan’s T20 skipper Salman Ali Agha believes the long-term success of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) hinges not on foreign star power but on the emergence of local players as match-winners and household names. In a candid conversation with ESPNcricinfo, Agha stressed that the sustainability of the league requires a shift in focus toward nurturing domestic talent. “No league can grow without local players stepping up,” he said. “ Foreign players may be available some years and not others—but it’s the local players who truly elevate a league.” Drawing parallels with elite global competitions, he added, “In the top five leagues, their local players have a huge role. So if we step up, this league can grow.” Agha, once overlooked in the national setup, has since become one of Pakistan’s most dependable all-format players. His rise to prominence began with consistent performances in the Test arena, eventually leading to his appointment as the national T20 captain in 2025. Reflecting ...

Israel admits failures in Gaza strike that killed 15 aid workers

The Israeli military on Sunday acknowledged professional failures and violations of orders in its review of last month’s killing of 15 emergency workers in Gaza but said there was no attempt to conceal the incident, despite dismissing a field commander for providing an inaccurate report. The paramedics and other rescue workers were shot dead on March 23 near the southern Gaza city of Rafah and buried in a shallow grave where their bodies were found a week later by officials from the United Nations and the Palestinian Red Crescent. A commanding officer is to be reprimanded and a deputy commander dismissed over the incident, the military said. It did not say if anyone would face criminal charges. “The examination identified several professional failures, breaches of orders, and a failure to fully report the incident,” the military said in a statement. “The fire in the first two incidents resulted from an operational misunderstanding by the troops, who believed they faced a tangible threa...

Despite the hostile reception, the convoy was able...

Why hailstorms happen and how giant hailstones form

A powerful hailstorm recently swept through several areas of Islamabad, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, damaging property and uprooting trees. In many neighbourhoods, residents reported unusually large hailstones crashing down with force. The intense hailstorm shattered car windows and glass panes, while wind gusts toppled trees, leading to significant financial losses for many residents. But how exactly does hail form, and what causes small pellets to grow into damaging, golf ball-sized ice chunks? According to meteorologists, hail forms during thunderstorms when warm, moist air near the ground rises and collides with colder air in the upper atmosphere. This rising air current, known as an "updraft," lifts water droplets high into the storm system. “In the upper parts of the thunderstorm, where temperatures drop well below freezing, these droplets turn into ice,” experts say. “As they move up and down within the storm, they collect additional layers of ice, growi...

WTO warns US tariffs could shrink global trade in 2025

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has issued a stark warning that global trade is expected to decline in 2025, citing escalating trade tensions driven by US President Donald Trump's widespread tariff measures. The Geneva-based body has downgraded its trade forecast, now projecting a 0.2% contraction in global goods trade, a reversal from its earlier expectation of 2.7% growth. The WTO report, released on Wednesday, pointed to “severe downside risks” including retaliatory tariffs, policy uncertainty, and ongoing geopolitical tensions. The decline is expected to be most pronounced in North America, where trade is forecast to shrink by over 10%. WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala voiced concern over what she called the “decoupling” of the United States and China, describing it as “a phenomenon that is really worrying to me.” The rift between the two economic powerhouses, exacerbated by tit-for-tat tariff increases, has cast a long shadow over global economic stability. As of 5 ...

Dark Nexus: Drugs Impacting The Youth

Pakistan lies at the tri-junction of South Asia, West Asia, and Central Asia. Its geo-proximity with Afghanistan makes it particularly vulnerable to Afghan-produced drugs. Afghanistan produces nearly ninety percent of the world's opium, the bulk of which is trafficked to the illicit market. Around forty percent of Afghan-produced drugs pass through Pakistan. It is in this vein that Pakistan can rightfully be called a victim and transit state. Pakistan is a country of over 240 million people, out of which nearly 154 million (sixty-four percent) are in the age bracket of 18–35 years. This youth bulge is a unique demographic dividend that distinguishes Pakistan from its contemporaries. The asset can be converted into a liability if not taken care of well. Drug abuse is one such threat to our youth that needs immediate attention. Plant-based drugs have been a source of concern for the world community for a long time now. However, the advent of synthetic drugs has further compounded the...

After VOA, Trump administration shuts down Arabic network Alhurra

Alhurra, the Arabic-language television network established by the US government after the 2003 invasion of Iraq, announced on Saturday it will cease broadcasts and lay off most of its staff following a decision by the Trump administration to halt funding. The network launched in 2004 amid US frustration with media coverage of the Iraq war, particularly from Qatar-backed Al Jazeera, which, two decades later, remains a dominant force in Arabic-language media. “Media in the Middle East thrive on a diet of anti-Americanism,” said Jeffrey Gedmin, president and CEO of Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN), which oversees Alhurra and other US-funded Arabic-language outlets. Gedmin criticized the decision, stating it made “no sense to kill MBN” as a viable alternative voice, arguing that the move effectively "opens the field to American adversaries and extremists." The funding halt came as part of a sweeping cost-cutting initiative led by billionaire Elon Musk. In March, the Trump...

New Jersey woman arrested for attempting to hire hitman on Tinder to kill ex-boyfriend and daughter

A 26-year-old New Jersey woman, Jaclyn Diiorio, has been arrested on charges of attempting to hire a hitman via Tinder to kill her ex-boyfriend, a Philadelphia police officer, and his 19-year-old daughter. Diiorio allegedly offered to pay a confidential informant $12,000 for the murders, according to a Camden County criminal complaint and affidavit obtained by CNN. Diiorio connected with the informant on the dating app Tinder and exchanged phone calls and text messages before meeting in person. During their interactions, Diiorio reportedly expressed her desire to have her ex-boyfriend, a 57-year-old officer, and his daughter killed. She allegedly paid the informant $500 in cash as part of the arrangement, which led to her arrest last week in Gloucester Township, located about 15 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Authorities also found that Diiorio was carrying a bottle of pills with the label removed, believed to be alprazolam, a controlled substance typically used to treat anxiety and ...

"I think we are very close to a basis for negotiations and if we can conclude this basis next week, we’ll have gone a long way and will be able to start real discussions based on that,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told state television. Araqchi said the talks - a first between Iran and a Trump administration, including his first term in 2017-21 - took place in a "productive, calm and positive atmosphere". "Both sides have agreed to continue the talks ... probably next Saturday ... Iran and the U.S. side want an agreement in the short term. We do not want talks for (the sake of) talks," Araqchi added. There was no immediate US comment on the talks. Saturday's exchanges were indirect and ...

James Anderson receives knighthood after historic test career

England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, James Anderson, has been awarded a knighthood in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list, released on Friday. Anderson, 42, retired from Test cricket in July 2024 after claiming 704 wickets, the most by any fast bowler in the history of the format and third overall behind only spin greats Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708). Anderson finished his international career with 188 Tests and 194 ODIs under his belt. He was gently nudged into retirement by England captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum last year, but the veteran seamer has not ruled out an extended run in domestic cricket. “I am not...

Taylor Swift re-enters Kanye West’s Twitter hitlist

Trump hikes China tariffs to 125%, temporarily eases rates for other nations

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would temporarily lower new tariffs on many countries, even as he raised them further on imports from China, in a sudden reversal that sent US stocks sharply higher. Trump's announcement came less than 24 hours after steep new tariffs kicked in on imports from dozens of trading partners. The new trade barriers have hammered markets, raised the odds of recession and prompted retaliatory responses from China and the European Union. Trump said he would raise the tariff on Chinese imports to 125% from the 104% level that took effect at midnight, further escalating a high-stakes confrontation between the world's two largest economies. Trump said he would at the same time suspend targeted tariffs on other countries for 90 days to allow time for US officials to negotiate with countries that have sought to reduce them. A 10% blanket duty on almost all US imports will remain in place, the White House said. The announcement also does not app...

Saudi Arabia announces new policy for 'Iqama' renewal

Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Passports has introduced a new policy that allows residents to renew their “Iqama” (residency permit) even if some dependents or companions are currently outside the country, as long as the head of the household remains within the Kingdom. The move is expected to ease administrative challenges for expatriates who previously faced obstacles renewing their residency due to a family member’s absence from Saudi Arabia. “The presence of the head of the household inside the Kingdom is now sufficient for Iqama renewal,” the Directorate confirmed in a statement. The policy addresses various real-life situations commonly faced by expatriate families — such as children studying abroad, a parent travelling for medical reasons, or family emergencies requiring travel. Previously, such cases risked delays or legal complications if the Iqama expired while a family member was outside the Kingdom. Under the revised rules, families can maintain their legal residency...

US sanctions Pakistani firms over national security concerns

The United States Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has added over a dozen Pakistani firms to its Entity List for their involvement in "unsafeguarded" nuclear activities, with an additional seven firms facing restrictions for their contributions to Pakistan’s ballistic missile program. The move follows recent changes to the US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and affects 70 entities from China, Pakistan, Iran, South Africa, and the UAE, as reported on the US Federal Register website. Red Crescent calls deaths of aid workers in Gaza strike a ‘war crime’

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has called for an independent international investigation after 15 medical and humanitarian workers were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza’s Rafah region on March 23. “This constitutes a full-fledged war crime,” the organisation said in a statement, citing what it called a “dangerous pattern” of violations against international humanitarian law. PRCS President Younis al-Khatib urged the formation of a commission “to establish the facts and hold those responsible accountable”. The medics were in ambulances responding to an earlier Israeli strike when they came under sustained fire. Video recovered from one of the victims’ phones reportedly shows the team in reflective uniforms and clearly marked rescue vehicles before the shooting began. PRCS said the convoy came under fire for five minutes, with communication records confirming the gunfire continued for two hours until contact with one of the medics was lost. A survivor reported that the ambulan...

Political row after Labour MPs deported by Israel over anti-Israel claims

A political storm has erupted after two Labour MPs were barred from entering Israel and deported, amid accusations they were planning to spread "anti-Israel hatred." Yuan Yang, MP for Earley and Woodley, and Abtisam Mohamed, MP for Sheffield Central, were denied entry upon arrival at Ben Gurion Airport on Saturday. The Israeli immigration ministry claimed the MPs were suspected of intending to "document the activities of security forces and spread anti-Israel hatred." Both MPs expressed shock at their treatment, insisting they were part of an official parliamentary delegation. However, Israeli officials denied this, stating there was no evidence of such a delegation and no prior knowledge of their visit. The MPs were accompanied by two assistants on the trip, which was organized by the Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). The incident has drawn sharp political reactions. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch defended Isr...

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday condemned the use of “abusive language” by foreign spectators targeting Pakistan players following the national team’s 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand in their one-day international (ODI) campaign. The incident took place after the third ODI at Mount Maunganui, where Pakistan all-rounder Khushdil Shah was seen engaging with fans in response to verbal abuse. According to a statement issued by the PCB, spectators hurled inappropriate remarks and anti-Pakistan slogans at players present on the field. “When anti-Pakistan slogans emerged, cricketer Khushdil Shah stepped in and urged the spectators to refrain,” the board said. “In response, Afghan spectators escalated the situation by using further inappropriate language in Pashto.” Tensions between some Afghan and Pakistani fans have surfaced in the past, often mirroring the strained political and security ties between the two neighbouring nations. The incident occurs amid a backdrop of inc...

9 fascinating facts about whales you should know

Whales, the majestic giants of the ocean, have a remarkable evolutionary history that dates back over 50 million years. Once land-dwelling creatures that walked on four legs, these marine mammals evolved from their ancestors, like Pakicetus, which roamed the shores of present-day Pakistan. Pakicetus, a goat-sized creature, exhibited early adaptations for aquatic life, including the ability to hear underwater. As their descendants continued to adapt to life in water, the cetacean lineage led to species like Ambulocetus, which lived between 50 and 48 million years ago. Today, whales are divided into two main groups: the baleen whales and the toothed whales. Baleen Whales vs. Toothed Whales Baleen whales, such as humpbacks and blue whales, have fibrous 'baleen' plates that help them filter large quantities of zooplankton like krill and copepods. Toothed whales, including orcas, sperm whales, and belugas, have teeth that enable them to feed on larger prey such as fish, squid, and o...

Govt spends millions on petrol-hybrid cars for ‘eco-force’

For more than a decade, Lahore has choked under a thick blanket of smog and air pollution. But successive governments seem more focused on polishing their green credentials than making a real difference. Continuing this trend, the newly formed Environment Protection Force aims to lead by example in a city where most commercial and private vehicles still run on petrol, with no proper emissions monitoring. Its solution? Patrolling the streets and conducting inspections in 25 gleaming hybrid cars—purchased at a staggering cost of Rs 250 million, funded under the World Bank Green Program. To give the government the benefit of the doubt, some might call it a step in the right direction. But that argument quickly falls apart when most commuters in the city can barely afford an electric motorbike, let alone an eco-friendly car. The new force, however, will have access to 250 electric motorbikes, along with modern inspection equipment—including tablets and instruments for gas and water analysi...
