The second round of negotiations between the Punjab government and the opposition over the reinstatement of 26 suspended members of the provincial assembly concluded on Sunday without any resolution, though both sides agreed to continue dialogue in the coming days. Dalai Lama succession a ‘thorn’ in China-India ties, says Chinese embassy

The succession of Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, is a thorn in China-India relations, the Chinese embassy in New Delhi said on Sunday, as India’s foreign minister prepares to visit China for the first time since deadly border clashes in 2020. Ahead of celebrations this month for his 90th birthday that were attended by senior Indian ministers, the head of Tibetan Buddhists riled China again by saying it had no role in his succession. Tibetans believe the soul of any senior Buddhist monk is reincarnated after his death, but China says the Dalai Lama’s succession will also have to be approved by its leaders. The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet, and Indian foreign relations experts say his presence gives New Delhi leverage against China. India is also home to about 70,000 Tibetans and a Tibetan government-in-exile. Yu Jing, a Chinese embassy spokesperson, said on social media app X that some people...

In another development, a district judge ordered a halt to "roving patrols" in Los Angeles by federal agents who were detaining suspected undocumented migrants without probable cause and denying them due process. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong ordered an end to the arrests, which she said were being made "based upon race alone," on whether a person was speaking Spanish or English with an accent or because of their place of work.Trump's remarks and the court order come a day after a chaotic raid on a cannabis plantation in Ventura County some...

Inside American mosques

Noam Chomsky wrote in his book, Requiem for the American Dream, that the arrival of tax season in America every year should be a time of celebration in this country because it means Americans collectively get to fund the programmes they are excited about. But that is not what happens and it is in reality a sad time because Americans pay their hard earned money in a tax system, which is strongly believed to be corrupt and realistically tilted toward benefitting the richest and taking from the poor and middle class in America. The tax returns are filed just because they have to be done, not because that is something that fulfills the promise of America, not because it makes possible the things Americans care about. Mosques in America are no different. I go there not because I am excited about it but because I must go, at least every Friday. And I am not excited not because I have some faith issues but because religion is the last thing that is a priority there. Sure, there is a service w...

Trump slaps extra 10% tariffs on BRICS nations

US President Donald Trump's decision to hit "anti-American" BRICS nations -- including China and India -- with an extra 10 percent trade tariff roiled the final day of the bloc's summit in Rio de Janeiro Monday. Trump threatened the 11-nation grouping -- which includes some of the world's fastest-emerging economies -- late on Sunday, after they warned against his "indiscriminate," damaging and illegal tariff hikes. "Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff," Trump wrote on social media. BRICS members account for about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output. Members China, Russia and South Africa responded coolly to Trump's latest verbal barrage, insisting the bloc was not seeking confrontation with Washington. BRICS summit ends with call for funding climate mitigation

Leaders of the BRICS group of developing nations concluded their summit in Rio de Janeiro on Monday by demanding that wealthy countries take responsibility for financing climate mitigation efforts in the Global South. In his opening remarks, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who will host the United Nations climate summit in November, condemned climate change denial and unilateralism, indirectly criticising US President Donald Trump’s earlier decision to withdraw from the 2015 Paris Agreement. “Today, denialism and unilateralism are eroding past achievements and harming our future,” Lula said. “The Global South is in a position to lead a new development paradigm without repeating the mistakes of the past.” On Sunday, Trump responded to BRICS criticism by accusing the bloc of "anti-American policies" and threatening its members with an additional 10% tariff. BRICS leaders dismissed the comments and reaffirmed their commitment to a multilateral global order. In his...

Israel to send delegation to Qatar for Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal talks

Israel has decided to send a delegation to Qatar for talks on a possible Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal, an Israeli official said, reviving hopes of a breakthrough in negotiations to end the almost 21-month war. Palestinian group Hamas said on Friday it had responded to a US-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal in a "positive spirit", a few days after US President Donald Trump said Israel had agreed "to the necessary conditions to finalise" a 60-day truce. The Israeli negotiation delegation will fly to Qatar on Sunday, the Israeli official, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, told Reuters. But in a sign of the potential challenges still facing the two sides, a Palestinian official from a militant group allied with Hamas said concerns remained over humanitarian aid, passage through the Rafah crossing in southern Israel to Egypt and clarity over a timetable for Israeli troop withdrawals. Iran hit five Israeli bases during 12-day war, radar data reveals

Iranian missiles struck five Israeli military bases during the recent 12-day war, according to radar data analyzed by researchers at Oregon State University and shared with The Telegraph. The hits — which reportedly include a major air base, an intelligence centre, and a logistics hub — have not been disclosed by Israeli authorities due to strict military censorship. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) declined to confirm the reported strikes but stated: “What we can say is that all relevant units maintained functional continuity throughout the operation.” The radar-based findings suggest that six Iranian missiles reached targets in Israel’s north, south, and centre, contradicting public claims of minimal damage to military infrastructure. Israel admits that 50 Iranian missiles hit amid strict censorship . Public hospitals hand out shelf-sliced drugs

The procurement of medicines in Sindh’s public hospitals remains mired in controversy due to repeated violations of established regulations, with many healthcare facilities stocking up on near-expiry drugs in an attempt to curtail expenditures. Despite clear rules against the purchase of near-expiry drugs, hospitals continue to buy medicines with shorter shelf lives as they are significantly cheaper compared to those with longer expiry durations. These low-cost purchases are a recurring issue in the province, raising questions about transparency and patient safety. As per the policies of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), the minimum shelf life for hospital-supplied medicines should be at least six months to one year therefore, medicines with an expiry date within 2–3 months should not be procured. Despite these guidelines, there is no robust mechanism in place to ensure compliance in hospitals across Sindh. Each year, various reports highlighting irregularities worth bi...

India unveils $234m drone scheme in response to Pakistan conflict

India will launch a $234 million incentive programme for civil and military drone makers to reduce their reliance on imported components and counter rival Pakistan's programme built on support from China and Turkey, three sources told Reuters. The nuclear-armed neighbours are now locked in a drones arms race. New Delhi will launch a 20 billion Indian rupees ($234 million) programme for three years that will cover manufacture of drones, components, software, counter drone systems, and services, two government and one industry source, who did not want to be named, told Reuters. Details of the programme have not been previously reported and its planned expenditure is higher than the modest 1.2 billion rupees production-linked incentive scheme New Delhi laun...
