Leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held a meeting with the President Dr Arif Alvi on Monday and briefed him on the alleged irregularities during the recently held general elections. According to a statement issued by the president's office, Dr Alvi met with PTI leaders Raoof Hassan and Umer Niazi, during which they informed the president about the evident irregularities during the February 8 polls. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) cabinet of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) has prepared a comprehensive report about the party’s crushing defeat in the February 8 general elections in the province. Sources within the JUI-F told The Express Tribune that the initial report has been prepared but it has been decided not to make it public till policy guidelines are given by the central leadership. The provincial cabinet held its meeting on Sunday evening in Peshawar. The meeting was presided over by provincial Amir Maulana Attaur Rehman. “The meeting discussed the different aspects and reasons which led to the party’s complete defeat in the recent general elections at the hand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and also reviewed reports submitted by the district administrations,” said an official of JUI-F, adding that the meeting was informed that the report has been finalized but it would be released once a clear-cut policy is given by the central leaders. Some activists working for the protection of the environment in Pakistan have claimed that 2,170 tons of paper was used for the preparation of ballots as well as other documents used in the recent general elections in the country and 49,600 trees were chopped down for this purpose. However, experts said the country did not produce paper itself, but imported it. They added that Pakistan recycled used paper and cardboard for the polls. In the 2018 general elections, 800 tons of paper was used for printing the ballots. This time, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had estimated that 2,170 tons of paper was required for printing the ballots for this year’s general elections. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has worked out an initial power-sharing formula regarding the formation of the coming federal government, which would be discussed during the talks with the potential allies to cobble up a sustainable coalition. According to PML-N sources, the initial formula stipulates that if the coalition parties agree to give the post of prime minister to the PML-N, then the post of president and speaker will be given to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Similarly, the post of deputy speaker can be given to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) or any of the independent members joining the coalition.
