SC quashes ex-MPA’s disqualification

The Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed the disqualification of former MPA Samina Khawar Hayat in the fake degree case. The court said that a seven-member larger bench has already declared that one couldn’t be disqualified in a suo motu case. This case would also be seen in light of the judgment of seven-member bench. Petitioner’s lawyer Tariq Mehmood Advocate adopted the stance that the top court disqualified his client in a suo motu case. Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, during hearing, questioned that whether the ECP has any objection over the abolishing of disqualification of the petitioner. He said that the disqualification period is now five year which had already passed. It may be mentioned here that the top court has disqualified Samina Khawar Hayat on July 25, 2013 on charges of having a fake degree. The petitioner was elected as MPA on the ticket of PML-Q.

Gaza authorities say 700 Palestinians killed in overnight strikes

New law lets Pakistanis hold dual nationality with 22 countries

Pakistan has formalised new dual citizenship arrangements with 22 countries under the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2024, allowing its nationals to retain Pakistani citizenship even after acquiring nationality of these countries. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, a sub-department of the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that Pakistani citizens will no longer be required to renounce their Pakistani nationality if they obtain citizenship from any of the 22 designated countries. This marks a significant departure from the previous policy, under which only a few select countries had such agreements with Pakistan.
