Pakistan, India urged to restore HCs

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs on Wednesday recommended that both Pakistan and India should restore high commissioners in each other’s capital. According to an official handout issued by the NA Secretariat said Chaired by Mohsin Dawar, the committee was briefed on the foreign minister’s recent visit to India and it was underscored that the minister’s participation in the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers reaffirmed the relevance of the SCO and the importance that Pakistan attaches to regional peace, security, economic prosperity and connectivity. The committee was informed that the member states do not bring bilateral relations on SCO platform. However, to respond to the insinuating remarks of Indian Foreign Minister over cross-border terrorism, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto in his statement, condemned the “unilateral and illegal measures by states in violation of international law and Security Council resolutions”, which run counter to the SCO objectives.

New law lets Pakistanis hold dual nationality with 22 countries

Pakistan has formalised new dual citizenship arrangements with 22 countries under the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2024, allowing its nationals to retain Pakistani citizenship even after acquiring nationality of these countries. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, a sub-department of the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that Pakistani citizens will no longer be required to renounce their Pakistani nationality if they obtain citizenship from any of the 22 designated countries. This marks a significant departure from the previous policy, under which only a few select countries had such agreements with Pakistan.
